SparkMinds

Supporting your work, never replacing it.

A fair question, from parents and professionals alike: does an app like this replace the people already helping my child? No. Here is exactly how SparkMinds works with your team, and where it stops.

If you're a parent, you may be wondering whether SparkMinds takes the place of the professionals guiding your child. It does not.

If you are one of those trained and experienced professionals, you may be wondering whether SparkMinds competes with you or second-guesses your plan. It does not.

We reinforce, not replace, what the parents and professionals are doing. A team of qualified professionals working in partnership with the family is the best thing for helping a DHH child develop language. SparkMinds can make the work you're already doing more effective. The app does not replace the audiologist, therapist, and teacher who knows you and your child. Most of all, it enhances what only you–the parent–can do. This is not a disclaimer. It is, by design, our core vision.

Here is exactly how SparkMinds works alongside your child's team, and how it defers to you, and when you have it, to your professional team.

What SparkMinds does: optimize the time between sessions

A young child spends almost 99% of their waking week not in a therapy session, but at home, with parents and caregivers, living their daily life. That is where language is built, in a slow build-up of small moments, and it is exactly where a professional can't ever be present for. (We wrote about this in The In-Between.)

SparkMinds is there for you in the time between the therapy sessions. It helps parents turn more of the everyday moments into the kind of listening and language practice that a teacher or therapist would encourage, in the days between therapy sessions. SparkMinds works from the goals the parents and the professionals have set, weaving them in the family's own routines. The parent continues to be the expert on the child. SparkMinds suggests ideas, adds a little structure and intention to what only the parents can do.

SparkMinds also provides a place to make notes and reflect on patterns you are noticing. It helps you bring these to your professional team who can act on them. A parent who has been paying attention all week, with a little guidance from the app on what to notice, arrives at the next appointment with better information: what's working at home, what's not, what changed since last week. That makes the time in the therapy session more effective, setting up the family for another week of learning and growing.

What SparkMinds does not do

  • SparkMinds does not diagnose anything, or make audiological or medical decisions. It is not a hearing test and not a clinical tool. SparkMinds does not set your child's clinical goals on its own. When you have a professional team, the goals that are appropriate for your child come from the professionals who are working with you. SparkMinds works from those goals; it does not create competing or conflicting ones.
  • SparkMinds does not replace therapy, audiology, or specialist teaching. Fifty minutes with a skilled professional is not something an app can reproduce, and we do not aim to do so.
  • SparkMinds is not for children. It is for the adults in their lives. Young children learn best from humans they live with and love, not from technology. SparkMinds helps the adults be the best language partners their child can have.

We want to be clear about these designed limits of the app so that we can have a more honest and more effective collaboration with parents and professionals.

Why we support, not replace

The evidence in early intervention points the same way our clinical experience does: the strongest outcomes are seen when families are active, coached partners, not when a child simply receives more hours with a specialist. The best teachers and therapists have always known this, which is why the best of their session time is spent coaching the caregiver, not drilling the child. SparkMinds is built on that same premise, aimed at the family's life between the therapy sessions.

That's also why we haven't created an app that tries to replace professionals. It would cut the family off from assessment, from device management, from the clinical judgment that decides what a particular child needs next. We are a resource that helps a family show up to their professionals more prepared, and do the language development work at home more confidently and more effectively.

What if you don't have a professional team working with you?

If you're a family looking for professionals to help you, you can still start with SparkMinds. We will help you get started with activity suggestions and strategies to build your child's listening and language skills, and give you guidance on building your professional team.

For the professionals reading this

If you are a trained professional who supports DHH families, here is the honest truth - an app cannot compete with your role. In partnership with families, you assess, you set goals, you manage devices, you make the judgement calls.

SparkMinds helps the families you already guide carry over and practice language goals in the "in-between". It helps them bring you clearer information when they return. It also reaches families who are still on a waitlist for your services, so less of the early window is lost before you can start helping them.

SparkMinds currently supports families building listening and spoken language. Sign language is always welcome alongside it. Language is language. We never position one path as superior, and we never position ourselves as a replacement to the people doing this work with a child every week.

If that is a fit for the families you serve, we would love to talk.
