Plain-language summary

This policy covers two things: the SparkMinds website at sparkminds.co (including the Founding Family waitlist form) and the Listening Check iOS app.

  • The website collects the information you give us through the Founding Family form so we can stay in touch and personalize your eventual SparkMinds experience. We don't sell it. We don't share it for advertising. We use a small amount of privacy-respecting analytics to understand how families find us.
  • The Listening Check app stores all data on your device. We do not collect, transmit, or sell any personal information from the app.

The detail below covers exactly what we collect, where it is stored, how to delete it, and the rights you have under GDPR and CCPA.

1. Who we are

SparkMinds, Inc. is a company dedicated to supporting families of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. We are the data controller responsible for any personal information handled in connection with the SparkMinds website and the Listening Check app.

2. Scope of this policy

This policy applies to:

  • The SparkMinds public website at sparkminds.co and its subpages, including the Founding Family waitlist form.
  • The Listening Check iOS app published by SparkMinds, Inc.

It does not apply to third-party websites or services we link to.

3. Website: what we collect and why

Information you provide through the Founding Family form

When you submit the form on sparkminds.co/invitation, we collect:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your phone country code and phone number
  • Your child's age range (e.g., "2 to 3 years")
  • Your child's hearing device type (e.g., bilateral cochlear implants)
  • The primary language or languages spoken at home (optional)
  • Whether your child is currently in listening or speech therapy (optional)
  • An optional free-text note describing your biggest current challenge
  • Whether you would like to share feedback during early access (optional)
  • The page you submitted from, and any UTM parameters in the URL

We use this information to (a) contact you about your Founding Family status, (b) personalize your eventual SparkMinds experience, and (c) understand which information channels reach DHH families effectively. We do not sell this information.

4. Website: where the data goes

Form submissions are sent over HTTPS to a server-side function hosted on Vercel, which forwards them to an Airtable base under our control. Both Vercel and Airtable act as our data processors. Once accounts are introduced, account and subscription data will be stored in Supabase (Postgres) and payment data will be processed by Stripe, both as data processors. We have administrative access controls in place and review access periodically.

We may transfer data to processors located in the United States and the European Economic Area. Where required, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent safeguards.

5. Website: cookies and analytics

We use a small amount of privacy-respecting analytics to understand how families find SparkMinds and which parts of the site are useful. We ask for your consent before loading analytics. If you decline, no analytics will be loaded.

If you accept, we use PostHog as our analytics provider to collect aggregate usage data (such as page views and clicks). We do not record user sessions, and we do not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or social media tracking pixels.

You can change your consent choice at any time by clearing your browser storage for sparkminds.co.

6. Listening Check app: data summary

The Listening Check iOS app stores all data on your device. SparkMinds does not collect, transmit, or sell personal information from the app. The microphone, where used, is used only for real-time relative voice-level guidance during active listening checks; no audio is recorded or stored. For the full app privacy detail, see the appendix below.

7. Children's information

The SparkMinds Founding Family form collects information about your child (age range and hearing device type) at your direction, as the parent or caregiver. We do not knowingly collect information directly from children. The website is operated for adults.

The Listening Check app is designed to be used by caregivers on behalf of their children. All data stays on the caregiver's device.

8. Your rights (GDPR / CCPA)

Depending on where you live, you may have rights including:

  • Access: a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correction: ask us to fix inaccurate information.
  • Deletion: ask us to delete your personal information.
  • Portability: receive your information in a portable format.
  • Objection: object to certain uses of your information.
  • Opt out of sale or sharing (California): SparkMinds does not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

To exercise any of these rights, write to privacy@sparkminds.co. We aim to respond within 10 business days.

9. Retention and deletion

We keep the personal information you provide through the Founding Family form only as long as we need it for the purpose you gave it to us — inviting you to SparkMinds and preparing for your family.

  • If you ask us to delete it, we will. Email privacy@sparkminds.co and we will remove your information from our systems within 30 days (usually much sooner), except any minimal record we must keep for legal compliance.
  • If you join the waitlist but do not go on to use SparkMinds, we automatically delete your form data 12 months after your last contact with us.
  • If you become a SparkMinds user, we keep your information for as long as your account is active, and delete it within 90 days after you close your account.
  • Information about your child (age range, hearing device, therapy status) is treated as sensitive: we minimize it, use it only to personalize SparkMinds, and delete it on the same schedule.
  • Deletions take effect promptly in our live systems; residual copies in backups are purged within 90 days.

Listening Check app data is controlled entirely by you on your device. To delete it, follow the in-app instructions or remove the app.

10. Security

We use HTTPS in transit and the access controls offered by our providers. No system is perfectly secure, but we make reasonable, current-practice efforts to protect the data we hold. If we ever become aware of a meaningful security incident affecting your personal information, we will notify you promptly.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be reflected on this page and on the effective date above. Continued use of the website or app after a change indicates acceptance.

Appendix: Listening Check app, full detail

This appendix covers the Listening Check iOS app specifically. App version 1.0.

Data the app handles, all stored locally

  • Child's first name or nickname
  • Child's date of birth or age band
  • Hearing technology type
  • Optional setup notes
  • Listening session logs
  • Learning-to-Listen (LTL) training progress
  • Optional session notes entered by the caregiver

Data the app does not collect

  • Audio recordings of any kind
  • Video or camera data
  • Location data
  • Device identifiers (IDFA, IDFV, or similar)
  • Crash logs sent to SparkMinds
  • Usage analytics or behavioral telemetry
  • Health or medical records
  • Payment information (purchases are handled entirely by Apple)
  • Contacts, calendars, or any other app data on your device
  • Facial recognition or biometric data

Children under 13 (COPPA)

Listening Check is designed to be used by caregivers to support children, including children under 13. The app is operated by and for the caregiver, not directly by the child. The app may store a child's first name, age band, hearing technology type, and listening session results at the caregiver's direction. This information is stored exclusively on the caregiver's device.

Microphone use

The app requests microphone access for one purpose only: real-time relative voice-level guidance during listening check sessions. The app does not record audio, store audio, or transmit audio. Microphone access can be revoked in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.

Deleting app data

To delete a child profile and all associated sessions: Settings → Child Profiles → select the profile → Delete Profile. To delete all app data: delete the Listening Check app from your iPhone. This action cannot be undone.
